Measuring Ω0 using cluster evolution

چکیده
The evolution of the abundance of galaxy clusters depends sensitively on the value of the cosmological density parameter, Ω0. Recent ASCA data are used to quantify this evolution as measured by the cluster X-ray temperature function. A χ minimisation fit to the cumulative temperature function, as well as a maximum likelihood estimate (which requires additional assumptions about cluster luminosities), lead to the estimate Ω0 ≈ 0.45 ± 0.2 (1-σ statistical error). Various systematic uncertainties are considered, none of which enhance significantly the probability that Ω0 = 1. These conclusions hold for models with or without a cosmological constant, i.e. with Λ0 = 0 or 1 − Ω0. The statistical uncertainties are at least as large as any of the individual systematic errors that have been considered here, suggesting that additional temperature measurements of distant clusters will allow an improvement in this estimate. An alternative method that uses the highest redshift clusters to place an upper limit on Ω0 is also presented and tentatively applied, with the result that Ω0 = 1 can be ruled out at the 98 per cent confidence level. Whilst this method does not require a welldefined statistical sample of distant clusters, there are still modelling uncertainties that preclude a firmer conclusion at this time.

Measuring Ω0 from the Entropy Evolution of Clusters
In this paper, we have extended the entropy–driven model of cluster evolution developed by Bower (1997) in order to be able to predict the evolution of galaxy clusters for a range of cosmological scenarios. We have applied this model to recent measurements of the evolution of the Lx − T normalisation and X-ray luminosity function in order to place constraints on cosmological parameters. We find...

We examine the likelihoods of different cosmological models and cluster evolutionary histories by comparing semi-analytical predictions of X-ray cluster number counts to observational data from the ROSAT satellite. We model cluster abundance as a function of mass and redshift using a Press-Schechter distribution, and assume the temperature T (M, z) and bolometric luminosity LX(M, z) scale as po...
متن کاملGalaxy Cluster Abundance Evolution and Cosmological Parameters
We use the observed evolution of the galaxy cluster X-ray integral temperature distribution function between z = 0.05 and z = 0.32 in an attempt to constrain the value of the density parameter, Ω0, for both open and spatially-flat universes. We conclude that when all the most important sources of possible error, both in the observational data and in the theoretical modelling, are taken into acc...
متن کاملDynamical Evolution of Galaxies in Clusters
Tidal forces acting on galaxies in clusters lead to a strong dynamical evolution. In order to quantify the amount of evolution, I run self-consistent N-body simulations of disk galaxies for a variety of models in the hierarchically forming clusters. The tidal field along the galactic orbits is extracted from the simulations of cluster formation in the Ω0 = 1; Ω0 = 0.4; and Ω0 = 0.4, ΩΛ = 0.6 co...
متن کاملMeasuring the Density Fluctuation From the Cluster Gas Mass Function
We investigate the gas mass function of clusters of galaxies to measure the density fluctuation spectrum on cluster scales. The baryon abundance confined in rich clusters is computed from the gas mass function and compared with the mean baryon density in the universe which is predicted by the Big Bang Nucleosynthesis. This baryon fraction and the slope of the gas mass function put constraints o...
